What if I told you that you have the power to change your life using astrology? I probably wouldn't have believed me if you asked a few years ago. Even though astrology has been an interest of mine since I was little, for a while I had a hard time relating to the Libra horoscopes I read in teen magazines or randomly online. There's no way that I'm meant to be a social butterfly, I'm an introvert for crying out loud -- one of the many thoughts I had while reading about the stereotypical diplomatic and creative qualities of the zodiac sign. Unfortunately my skepticism prevented me from studying astrology more seriously until I stumbled onto "Astro Twitter" or the astrology side of X (formerly Twitter). Seeing black creators during the pandemic like @iJaadee, @KemiMarie, @TarotbyBronx share how they used astrology to heal, enhance their lives or predict future trends re-ignited my interest. I studied my chart forwards and backwards, read numerous sources between astro Twitter and Google, recognizing that I was more than just my Sun sign. I resonated more with the empathy and sensitivity of my Pisces ascendant, I'd just spent a lot of my life straying away from those traits due to past experiences of reactions towards my emotional expression. It made me wonder: Who am I really and who do I have the potential to be? That was just the beginning my metamorphosis.
What is Astrology?
The astrology that we know today is based on practices from numerous ancient civilizations, like ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, China, and even Mesopotamia. Throughout history, astrology has been used to interpret how movements within the cosmos affects our human affairs. Each planetary position and zodiac sign offers a unique insight, guiding us toward a more fulfilling existence, emphasizing the connections we have to each other and the world around us. Some civilizations like ancient Egypt even created astrological systems that aided in medical, religious, and political decisions. Although the practice of astrology as a whole has become more of a hot topic online today, there are still critics and skeptics out there like I once was. Now, I'm not here to convince everyone that astrology is real, however I have found that astrology can be a powerful tool for guiding personal transformation.
After a couple years of piecing bits of my astrology on my own, I booked my first astrology reading for my 22nd birthday. Over the Zoom call, the astrologer interpreted my natal chart, asking about my life experiences while explaining the planetary energy. She also calculated my Solar return, meaning my year ahead as the Sun travels back to the position it was in when I was born. Looking back, she was pretty accurate in predicting the impactful events in my life that year. Yet the student in me wanted to know: HOW? How exactly do you understand the language of celestial bodies?
Understanding Your Natal Chart
A natal chart essentially is a snapshot of the sky at the very moment you were born. If you've ever seen a natal chart, it looks like a wheel. It's split into 12 sections, each section representing the energy of one of the twelve zodiac signs. These sections are called houses, each house represents a different area of our lives and seasons along the Sun's annual path. Notice the 4 bolded lines marked in a cross pattern, these are concentrated energy points representing 4 main pillars of life. This is called the natal cross and consists of your ascendant (AC), descendant (DC), midheaven (MC), and Imum Coeli (IC). These pillars can give clues about our purpose or how our energy relates to our inner world and external circumstances. Scattered throughout the houses, you will find symbols of the 10 planets, and even asteroids depending on the astrologer. Depending on how the planets are placed, they may even be communicating with each other through what's called an aspect. Aspects are a bit more complex so I won't go into too much detail here, but they describe whether the relationship between planets is more harmonious or competitive. Now let's put it all together: Planets + Zodiac signs + Houses (+ aspects) = Your unique blueprint!
As astrology has grown in popularity thanks to social media, the question has shifted from "What's your zodiac sign?" to "What's your Big Three?". Your Big Three encompasses your most influential placements in your chart: Your ascendant (AC aka rising sign) and the luminaries, Sun and Moon. If you're anything like me, maybe you didn't resonate with your Sun sign at first either. Maybe your rising or moon sign makes more sense to you. For example, my Big Three are Libra Sun, Virgo Moon, and Pisces Rising. Sometimes planning overwhelms me but structure and organization is usually a trait that satisfies a Virgo Moon. In this case, I lean more towards the "go with the flow" attitude of a Pisces when I feel like I want more flexibility within my schedule.
How Astrology Can Aid Personal Transformation
Interpreting our natal placements can provide insight into our greatest potential. Sometimes we don't even realize that we are exhibiting the more shadowy traits of our sign, but these are chances to reframe our self-beliefs and provide self-awareness. Indecisiveness is a behavior exemplified by Libras, which was not fun reading about while diving into my chart. Once I finished being defensive about it, I kept reading to understand the stereotypical indecisiveness. Libras have the gift of understanding balance and seeing things from both perspectives. The indecisiveness comes from seeking balance and harmony but in combination with morality in its highest form, is capable of making fair and rational decisions. So don't write yourselves off, what you might think is a "weakness" can turn out to be one of your strengths.
Astrology can also be useful for noticing the patterns in your life. The eighth house for example can show your attitude towards life changes or how you handle change. With my Sun there, I’ve gone through many challenging life surprises but I come out of the darkness feeling reborn and refreshed. One of the bright sides of moving around a lot growing up, was that I was able to recreate my identity at school to make new friends.
Transits are what we call the planetary movements throughout the zodiac. It is the length of time a planet spends in a sign and can influence the timing of our personal growth. The length of a transit depends on the speed of the planet. The moon changes signs every two to three days while the sun changes every 28 to 30 days. When a transiting planet enters a new sign, it can activate your natal planets (or house if you have none present) in that house. Transits can show up as extra opportunities or energy that supports or challenges us, highlighting certain aspects in our lives. Jupiter takes about one year to travel one sign. While Jupiter was in Taurus last year, my natal placement, I gained my certificates in tropical astrology and digital marketing with ease!
Practical applications of astrology
Becoming aware of transits can help us set intentions and meaningful goals for ourselves. The additional awareness of supportive energies, potential resources, or obstacles can help us schedule and "plan" our lives accordingly. If Mars is involved in a transit, you might expect more energy to be put towards achieving your goal. While if Saturn is involved, you might face more delays or restrictive situations. In the case of the latter, be sure to make time for rest and reward!
Astrology can be used for more than just yourself, you can use it to enhance your relationships too. For instance, the moon can represent your relationship with your mother. As a Virgo moon, it’s almost as if I am my mother’s personal assistant at times. My moon is also in my seventh house of relationships so I tend to bring service-oriented or helper type vibe to my relationships. If I know my patterns of operation within my relationships, I am better able to pinpoint how I can grow within them. Astrology invites you to reflect on your path, embrace your true potential, and move forward with renewed optimism and purpose.
Bonus: (Shoutout to my mentor for this tip!). If you want to learn a cool party trick, for the next person's birthday you celebrate, find out their moon sign. My big sister is a Leo moon and before I was deep into astrology, I bought a Bluetooth karaoke mic for her birthday, not knowing that it was the perfect gift for her to express herself in proper Leo fashion. Recently, she’s even gifted me some stationery, which satisfies my Virgo need to write down all the details and organize my thoughts.
